It is optically active and participates in protein synthesis. It is currently commonly used as a nutritional fortifier in feed to compensate for the amino acid balance.

Mainly used as nutritional supplement. It has the same physiological effect as L-type methionine, but is low in price (L-type is produced from DL-type), so DL-methionine is generally used.
