Benzoic acid is an aromatic acid organic compound and the simplest aromatic acid. Its chemical formula is C7H6O2. It was originally made from benzoin gum, so it is called benzoic acid. Its appearance is white needle-like or scaly crystals. It will sublimate when the temperature is above 100ºC. Slightly soluble in cold water, hexane, soluble in hot water, ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon disulfide and turpentine, etc. Benzoic acid is widely found in nature in the form of free acid, ester or its derivatives. Mainly used to prepare sodium benzoate preservative, and used in fungicides and spices, etc.
