Polysorbate-80, also known as Tween-80, is a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier with the formula C24H44O6(C2H4O)n. Soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, vegetable oil, ethyl acetate, methanol, toluene, insoluble in mineral oil. Gelatinized at low temperature and recovered after heat. Very smelly, slightly bitter taste.
Tween-20 is lauryl ester; Tween-60 is stearate; Tween-80 is an oleate and has emulsifying effect.
It can be used as a wetting agent for suspension. Non-ionic surfactant.
Usage and dosage: Used as emulsifier when preparing oil-in-water emulsion or cream. It can also be used as a solubilization aid for oils (such as volatile oils).
In sulfur lotion, used as a wetting agent.
