Mannitol, with the chemical formula C6H14O6, is a sugar alcohol and an isomer of sorbitol. It is easily soluble in water and is a white crystalline powder with a sweet taste similar to sucrose.
1. Medical applications
As an excipient for tablets, mannitol is non-hygroscopic, dries quickly, has good chemical stability, and has the characteristics of refreshing taste and good granulation properties. It is used in anti-cancer drugs, antibacterial drugs, antihistamines and vitamins, etc. Some tablets. In addition, it is also used in chewable tablets such as hangover medicine and mouth cooling agent.
2. Food field
In terms of food, this product has the smallest water absorption among sugars and sugar alcohols, and has a refreshing sweetness. It is used for anti-sticking of maltose, chewing gum, rice cakes and other foods, and as anti-sticking powder for general pastries. It can also be used as a low-calorie, low-sugar sweetener in foods for diabetics and bodybuilding foods.
3. Industrial production
Polymannitol-oxypropylene ether made by pressing with mannitol as the starting agent is widely used in the plastics industry. Rigid polyurethane foams based on polymannitol-oxypropylene ether have excellent oil resistance and thermal oxidation resistance. It has good dimensional stability and heat resistance as high as 180ºC.
